Attack-Wing-Dragons

WizKids was holding back the crowds to demo the upcoming tabletop game for store owners at GAMA in Las Vegas this past weekend to rave reviews and a frantic buzz of activity around the table.

Above are the three Starter Set dogfighting dragons from Attack Wing: D&D, presented with ground troop figures for scale.

We’ll admit to having been puzzled when the game was first announced, with no idea how the mechanics of Star Trek: Attack Wing could be cross-bred with fantasy warfare.

As had been previously mentioned; some of the core game mechanics from WizKids’ successful Star Trek: Attack Wing game system have been used as the core of the D&D system, but apparently with heavy customization to the fantasy environment.

According to an on-site demo player leader (from Alliance Games, working on behalf of WizKids) it’s the unique dynamics of ground-versus-aerial combat – plus the spectacular dragon sculpts – that are creating most of the excitement.

A particularly popular new feature of the game is the ability to swap a different figure into the flexible ground unit bases (as long as you have the points and stat card for the original figure) allowing players to customize the look of their troops.

Based on early feedback, we’ve gone from “What?” to “Alright!” about this upcoming release.
